As the president said, the ruble accounted for 10-13% of settlements in 2021, and the yuan – 0.4%. As of September 2023, the ruble accounts for 40%, the yuan – 33%, the dollar and euro – 24%. “Why did they do this? I repeat, they shot themselves in the foot. Is this bad for us or not? Not really. The more we use national currency in financial calculations, the better. This increases our sovereignty and capabilities,” the president said during the “Results of the Year.”
Vladimir Putin earlier in December called Western financial system is outdated and archaic. In his opinion, SWIFT is discredited and is being replaced by payments in national currencies.
