“The United States suspends all CFE obligations between itself and any other participating State, effective December 7, consistent with our rights under international law,” the statement said.

It is clarified that such a decision was made in coordination with NATO allies. In addition, a number of countries that are not members of the alliance, but are parties to the treaty, also supported the suspension of CFE Treaty obligations. The White House added that the suspension would strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defense capabilities by removing restrictions that affect planning, deployment and exercises.

Earlier today NATO countries reportedthat they will suspend participation in the CFE Treaty “for as long as necessary.” The alliance said Russia allegedly “continues to demonstrate disdain for arms control” and is “undermining the rules-based international order.”

The procedure for Russia to withdraw from the treaty ended at midnight on November 7, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
