The US military reported on the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria

The US Armed Forces reported on the fight against the Islamic State (banned in the Russian Federation) in Iraq and Syria. According to them, in 2022, four hundred and sixty-six IS militants were eliminated in Syria, and another two hundred and fifteen were detained. In Iraq, more than two hundred and twenty jihadists have been neutralized, one hundred and fifty nine have been detained. The Pentagon praised the merits of the Iraqi intelligence services in the fight against terrorism and called them highly professional.
In addition, the military stressed that they divide the problem of ISIS into three parts. The first is the currently active militants. The second is the detained Islamic State supporters, of whom the US claims there are 10,000 in Syria and 20,000 in Iraq. It is noteworthy that the total number of imprisoned Islamists is slightly less than what was simultaneously in the IS at the time of its peak. Therefore, the desire of ISIS leaders to release their comrades is explained not only by considerations of humanity, but also by the practical use of a huge army of jihadists languishing in the dungeons, writes the Directorate 4 Telegram channel.
Finally, the third part of the problem is the potential militants of the group, in particular, twenty-five thousand children held in camps for relatives of MTO participants. How exactly the coalition is going to solve the problems has not been announced.
The other day, the Iraqi Armed Forces announced that in 2022 they liquidated more than two hundred IS militants. By comparison, in 2014, IS could lose 200 men in just two weeks, and in just one Iraqi province of Anbar. And this did not have a very strong effect on the total number of the group – the decrease in militants was compensated by the flow of those wishing to join the ranks of the MTO. But despite the decline in the intensity of IS activities, the group still poses a serious threat. With more or less significant upheavals in the region, the ISIS has every chance to regain the initiative and act on a much larger scale than it has been before.
