A group of senators in the US Congress is drafting a bill that would give US President Joe Biden the ability to use force against Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East, including the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah. “We have to be prepared for that if Hezbollah does intervene,” he said, adding that the United States does not yet have the authority to attack Iran-backed militias.

Such permission is necessary in case the war between Israel and the Palestinian organization Hamas escalates into a wider regional conflict, as well as if Hezbollah “intensifies” its attacks on Israel, the publication says.

The IDF has been carrying out strikes on the Gaza Strip since October 7, after the Palestinian group Hamas began fighting against Israel.
