The United States has extended sanctions protection for oil supplies from Russia to Japan under the project “Sakhalin-2” The exception to the restrictions will remain in effect until June 28, 2024. reported US Treasury.
The United States, the European Union and the G7 countries, when introducing a price ceiling for Russian oil, made an exception for energy raw materials produced as part of the Sakhalin-2 project. The relaxation applies only on the condition that this oil is supplied exclusively to Japan. The rule was scheduled to end on September 30, 2023.
The Japanese Ministry of Finance also proposed making an exception from anti-Russian sanctions for energy resources produced within the framework of the Arctic LNG 2 and Sakhalin 1 projects. The agency stated that it took such a step “to ensure the country’s energy security.”
The country expressed its readiness to provide construction and engineering services to Russian companies for the implementation of these projects. Japan also allowed its enterprises to carry out work related to exploration, production, liquefaction, storage, transportation, and transshipment of oil and gas to Arctic LNG 2 and Sakhalin 1.
