Representatives of the US House rejected a bill to allocate $17.6 billion in aid to Israel. Although the relief package received a majority vote in the lower house (250 to 180), it required the support of two-thirds of all representatives to pass.
According to Business Insider, The bill failed to pass because of opposition from Democrats who insisted that aid to Israel be included in a sweeping bill that also includes aid to Ukraine and funding to strengthen the US’s southern border. In addition, 14 Republicans spoke out against the initiative, believing that it is financially untenable.
On February 4, the Democratic-controlled Senate introduced legislation totaling $20.23 billion to secure the border, $60.06 billion to help Ukraine, $14.1 billion to help Israel, and $4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific region. On February 5, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives spoke out against the bill being discussed in the Senate. On February 6, US President Joe Biden accused former President Donald Trump of inciting Republicans against the adoption of the initiative developed by the Senate.
