The US Army will use commercial aircraft and ships as part of a new strategy

The new US strategy involves the use of commercial aircraft and ships for the transfer of forces, said the head of the US Transportation Command (TRANSCOM), General Jacqueline D. Van Ovost. This is reported by the Air and Space Forces website.
According to her, the relevance of the new strategy is due to the fact that China’s growing military capabilities could interfere with the military sea and air transportation of the United States and allies.
Van Ovost noted that during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the United States deployed a large number of forces by air. More than 85 percent of US troops are now stationed in the country, she said, but adversaries have the ability to prevent their deployment, so the US will start to have problems even before the troops arrive on the battlefield.
Van Ovost noted that recently TRANSCOM has already carried out missions for the delivery of soldiers and weapons, for example, during the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and the delivery of weapons to Ukraine. She said those operations showed problems and getting forces into the Pacific, for example to defend Taiwan, would be a much bigger challenge.
Commercial planes and ships will help fill the gap in US military transport planes and ships, she said, and more use will be made of air corridors, seaports, airports and railroads.
US plans to use commercial aircraft and force transport ships will be reflected in the Pentagon’s new National Defense Strategy, she said.
