North American wildlife is under threat due to invasive worms

An international team of researchers from Stanford University in the US, Sorbonne University in France and other scientific institutions said that the nature of North America is under threat due to the invasion of a large number of alien worms. This is stated in a publication in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

It is noted that specialists created a database based on data collected from 1891 to 2021, after which it was combined with another database, which, in turn, documented cases of detection of alien earthworms on the US border from 1945 to 1975. The data obtained by scientists shows that at least 70 invasive species of worms live in North America, capturing 97% of the soils examined by specialists across the continent and threatening local ecosystems.

Scientists explain the negative impact of invasive worm species on the soil by the fact that they change the microhabitat of some trees, which leads not only to plant stress, but also to the spread of their invasive species.
