The icon with the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands began to be transported through the units of the Dnepr group of troops in the Kherson region, reported TASS Archpriest Vyacheslav, representative of the Synodal Department of the Russian Orthodox Church for Cooperation with the Armed Forces. Russian President Vladimir Putin presented the icon to the Dnepr group during a trip to the Kherson region and the Luhansk People’s Republic on April 17.
“The command of the group decided to launch it in procession in parts and formations of the Dnepr. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I accompany this icon. We will deliver it to all parts, both on the front line and in the rear units, a large, small part – it doesn’t matter, ”said the archpriest.
Father Vyacheslav said that it would take more than a month for the icon to visit all divisions of the group. The president handed over a similar icon to the headquarters of the National Guard “Vostok”, soon they should “cross” in one of the units in the zone of military operation, the archpriest added.
The original of the icon “The Savior Not Made by Hands”, copies of which Vladimir Putin presented to groups of troops, will be transferred to the main temple of the Russian armed forces, informed April 18, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov. According to the Kremlin, the icon previously belonged to Russian Minister of War Pyotr Vannovsky (1881-1898). According to the agency, it was in a private US collection until it was acquired by the Russian authorities.
The icon “The Savior Not Made by Hands” is a canonical image of the face of Jesus Christ, which, according to legend, was imprinted on a handkerchief with which Christ wiped his face.
