Reuters: US cannot influence India’s dependence on Russian defense industry
Reuters writes that Washington, despite the multibillion-dollar US military technology deals, cannot yet end India’s dependence on the Russian military-industrial complex.
Arrangements made in the United States during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi do not mean that New Delhi is moving away from Moscow, it could take several decades, Arzan Tarapore, an Indian security expert at Stanford University, said.
According to him, “India still uses mainly Russian technology for the production of traditional weapons.” The potential for US-Indian cooperation, in his opinion, should be associated with new systems that India does not yet have.
US military analyst Derek Grossman stressed that the US will always be cautious about transferring military hardware and technology to India. He said that even if India could reduce its dependence on Moscow, the US would still be suspicious of how these systems are being used and whether they can help Russia due to its close partnership with India.
Earlier, the United States entered into an agreement with India on the repair of US Navy ships at an Indian shipyard. An agreement was also signed for the joint production of the F414 jet engine in India.
