The US Treasury imposed sanctions against Russian Dmitry Kudryakov in accordance with the Magnitsky Act, says in a departmental statement.

The Ministry of Finance claims that Kudryakov, as well as a citizen of Belarus, Irina Litvinyuk, are blacklisted “for their role in the exploitation of the mining sector in Guatemala.” The statement said the move is aimed at “fighting corruption,” which is one of the causes of migration from the region.

In addition, the restrictions affected Compania Guatemalteca de Niquel, Compania Procesadora de Niquel and Mayaniquel in Guatemala. They, as stated in the document, are subsidiaries of the Solway group, which the US Treasury calls Russian.

Lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was arrested in 2008 and charged with complicity in tax evasion, and in November 2009 he died in a Moscow detention center from heart failure. The Magnitsky Act was adopted in the United States in December 2012. A similar law has been in force in the UK since 2017. Persons sanctioned under this law are prohibited from entering the country and doing business on its territory.
