The US authorities are fully committed to the goal of fulfilling the requirements of the START-3 treaty. This was stated by US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance with Agreements Mallory Stewart.
According to the diplomat, uttered at a meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, the United States is ready to resume inspections of facilities. Previously, they were suspended due to the situation with the coronavirus pandemic.
Also, the US authorities are ready to negotiate a new arms control mechanism. This mechanism could replace START-3 in 2026, when the existing agreements expire. But the talks require US partners to act voluntarily, Stewart said.
