It is unlikely that the supply of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine will be able to change the course of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. This opinion on Thursday, July 20, was voiced in the American White House.
According to John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the US National Security Council, deliveries of American F-16 fighters to Ukraine may begin by the end of 2023, but “we do not believe that F-16s alone can change the situation there.”
Earlier, the head of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Milley, said that Ukraine you need to think not about new fighters, but about strengthening its air defense. Russia, he said, has about 1,000 fourth-generation combat aircraft – Su-24, Su-25, Su-30SM, Su-34, Su-35. To compete with them, Ukraine would need hundreds of F-16s. And the supply of such a number of aircraft is unrealistic for financial and production reasons.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov admitted that in the country no infrastructure to accommodate American F-16 aircraft. However, Ukraine expects to receive the fighter jets as early as 2024.
