Defense One: US sends experimental weapons to Ukraine to fight drones
U.S. government contractor SAIC said the U.S. is sending anti-drone missiles to Ukraine as part of an experimental platform. This is reported edition defense one.
The report said the experimental platform will be delivered to Ukraine as part of a major new air defense-focused military aid package announced on Tuesday.
A SAIC spokesman told the publication that it was about “10 mobile laser-guided c-UAS missile systems.” Currently, Ukraine is forced to shoot down drones with missiles, the cost of which is more than 20 times the cost of the target.
In January tests, SAIC used laser-guided BAE APKWS missiles, which achieved 100 percent hits, according to a company spokesperson. These missiles are significantly cheaper than the larger missiles of the Ukrainian air defense system.
In addition, the experimental system is equipped with an M240 machine gun and an electronic warfare device.
The company noted that in tests, the system was able to detect a drone at a distance of more than six miles and hit it at a distance of three miles.
