The US Air Force Global Strike Command conducted a test launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. About it informed press service of Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
“The test launch is part of a periodic activity designed to demonstrate that the United States nuclear deterrent is safe, reliable, and effective in deterring threats and reassuring our allies,” the statement said.
The press service of the base noted that similar tests of Minuteman III were carried out more than 300 times and this test “is not the result of current world events.”
A test launch from the Vandenberg base was also reported in February of this year and in September 2022. In the fall, the Pentagon also called these tests were “routine” and emphasized that the launch had already been planned for a long time. Then it was clarified that the United States notified Russia about this “in accordance with treaty obligations.”
The Minuteman III missile (translated from English as “militia”) was developed by Boeing and put into service in 1970. The maximum firing range is 15,000 km. The length of the missile with the warhead exceeds 18 m. The missile can carry from one to three warheads with a capacity of 0.3-0.6 Mt.
