The United States is planning to create a new sea-launched nuclear cruise missile
The United States needs to create and deploy a sea-launched cruise missile with a nuclear charge of the SLCM-N (Sea-Launched Cruise Missile – Nuclear) project, said the commander of the US Strategic Command, Air Force General Anthony J. Cotton. His words are quoted by the Sea Power Magazine website.
Cotton testified before the US Senate Armed Services Committee. According to him, the creation of such a missile was provided for in the Nuclear Posture Review of 2018.
Cotton stated the need to modernize all forces of the US nuclear triad, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, B-52 strategic bombers, Columbia-class strategic missile submarines, and sea- and air-launched nuclear cruise missiles.
Earlier, the administration of US President Joe Biden, with the support of representatives of the Democratic Party in Congress, opposed the development of the SLCM-N project. This was argued by the high cost of the project, the sufficient quantity of the current US nuclear arsenal, as well as the risks to nuclear stability in the world.
However, the US defense budget for fiscal year 2024 officially authorized the launch of this program, with initial operational readiness set for 2034. The SLCM-N project has been allocated $25 million for research in fiscal year 2024.
