The UNESCO World Heritage Committee considered it premature to include the Russian natural site “Volcanoes of Kamchatka” on the list of World Heritage Sites under threat. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko in Telegram.
The 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was held in Riyadh under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia. According to Victoria Abramchenko, the committee’s decision is a “balanced and non-politicized approach.”
“Russia has demonstrated to the world community the priority of environmental measures and environmental policy aimed at preserving unique natural complexes,” the prime minister’s press service said in a statement.
“Volcanoes of Kamchatka” was included in the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites in 1996. The question of their inclusion in the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger was raised back in 2021.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has been working on the creation of a specially protected natural area of federal significance “Volcanoes of Kamchatka” since 2022. By the beginning of November this year, the department must complete the preparation of a legal act on the creation of a national park and submit it to the government. In 2024, the Ministry of Natural Resources will establish a special regime for the protection and use of land and water bodies in the national park zone.
