Claire Nullis, a spokeswoman for the World Meteorological Organization, said the natural phenomenon El Niño, known for its warming effect, could replace the opposite phenomenon La Niña in the coming months. But as Nullis noted, it is impossible to unequivocally predict whether this will be accompanied by a summer heat wave, as this depends on the specific region and other factors.
WMO experts said that El Niño could appear in the coming months after a three-year period of persistent and prolonged La Niña, which has had an impact on temperature and precipitation in different parts of the world. The probability of the onset of neutral conditions in March-May is 90%, and the onset of El Niño in April-June is 60%.
If El Niño does come, it could lead to a new surge in global temperatures, said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. He recalled that 2016 is the warmest year on record for weather and climate, and this record was set thanks to a combination of El Niño and climate change. According to the WMO, there is a 93% chance that at least one year before 2026 will be the warmest.
WMO noted that the La Niña phenomenon has been ongoing since September 2020. It is associated with a large-scale cooling of surface water temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, as well as changes in tropical atmospheric circulation, including winds, pressures, and rainfall.
