The UN Security Council approved sending an armed mission to Haiti to fight gangs. About it reported TASS with reference to the resolution of the international organization.
The mission will become international, but will not be associated with the UN, the agency noted. It will be formed at the request of the Haitian authorities. Kenya will play a leading role in the mission.
The resolution was prepared by the United States and Ecuador. The document was supported by the majority of UN member countries. Russia and China abstained from voting.
The creation of an armed mission in Haiti involves expanding the arms embargo to organizations that may be related to criminal groups operating on the island.
Gang activity in Haiti has increased since the assassination of the country’s President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021, and an earthquake in August of the same year that killed more than 2,200 people. Now gangster groups control more than 80% of the capital of the republic, Port-au-Prince, and are increasing their influence in other regions.
