Russia has done everything necessary to ensure the safety of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, said the official representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.

“We are glad that the Russian Federation has done everything necessary to ensure the safety of our inspectors,” he said, answering a question about Russia’s prevention of an attempt by the Ukrainian side to land troops near the territory of the station (quote according to TASS).

Director General of the organization Rafael Grossi, who led the mission, said that the IAEA experts will remain at the power plant on a permanent basis. He also said that in a few hours of inspection of the Zaporizhzhya NPP he managed to collect enough important information and identify “key things”.

Earlier today, the head of the military-civilian administration (MAC) of the Zaporozhye region, Vladimir Rogov, said that three Ukrainian saboteurs who tried to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant were taken prisoner. Two of them are in critical condition. In addition, on the morning of September 1, the head of the Energodar CAA, Alexander Volga, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine also attempted to land troops near the city in the Russian-controlled territory of the Zaporozhye region. Energodar itself came under artillery fire, killing at least three people.

During a special military operation in Ukraine, the Russian military took control of part of the Zaporozhye region, including Energodar, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the ZNPP, is located. Subsequently, the station and the territory adjacent to it were repeatedly shelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has repeatedly emphasized that it does not use the facility for military purposes and does not place weapons on its territory. The discussion of the visit of the IAEA mission to the station has been going on since the beginning of August, when the shelling of the nuclear power plant became more frequent.
