The UN currently does not consider it possible to start a process for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, but is ready to support positive changes, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the organization’s secretary general, said.
“At the moment, as you can see from our daily reporting on violence on the ground and on the progress of military operations, it is obviously difficult to imagine a peace process now,” said the spokesman (quote according to TASS). He noted the readiness of the UN to support the settlement of the conflict, if “the dynamics can change.”
He also noted that the assessment of UN Secretary General António Guterres on the possibility of a peaceful settlement has not changed yet. “Obviously, the development of events indicates that the various parties are once again trying to contribute to the peace efforts. If this helps open up opportunities, then this will be a good development,” Haq said.
Formerly China and Russia accepted joint statement, which stressed the inadmissibility of violating the interests of any country in the field of security. In the text of the statement, the Russian and Chinese sides appealed to all states with “an appeal in the interests of the common welfare to strengthen dialogue and mutual trust”, as well as “to defend such universal values as peace, development, equality, justice, democracy and freedom”.
