The UN Court began hearings on the claim of Ukraine against Russia

On September 18, the International Court of Justice in The Hague began hearings on Ukraine’s claim against Russia for violation of the genocide convention in connection with the special operation. About it it says on the court’s website.
The hearings will take place from September 18 to 27. The Russian side will perform on the first day, and the Ukrainian side on the next day. It is noted that the court will also hear 32 other states that are involved in the case. Among them are Germany, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, France, Great Britain, etc.
Then Russia will speak in the second round of the case on September 25, and Ukraine on September 27.
Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia for violating the genocide convention on February 26, 2022, two days after the start of the special operation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov named its “based on perverse logic.” According to him, the UN court came under pressure from the “collective West.”
In March 2022, the court imposed “temporary measures” requiring Russia to suspend hostilities in Ukraine. The court also ordered both parties to refrain from escalating the situation. In October, the Russian Federation filed objections to the jurisdiction of the court and the admissibility of the claim. “Kyiv’s claims actually boil down to challenging the legality of conducting a special military operation in accordance with the UN Charter, as well as the status of the DPR and LHP,” – explained at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
They added that the convention has no relation to these issues, and pointed to Kyiv’s abuse of the right to appeal to the UN court.
