At a meeting of the UN Security Council, Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo noted that the UN is faced with the difficulty of confirming the accuracy of statements by Russia and Ukraine regarding the circumstances of the crash of the Il-76 military transport aircraft.
She explained that according to Russian data, there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, 6 crew members from Russia and 3 Russian military personnel on board. While Ukrainian authorities claim that the plane could be carrying missiles for Russian military systems.
“It is our understanding that Russia and Ukraine are conducting separate investigations into the incident, and Ukraine has requested an international investigation. At this time, the UN cannot verify the authenticity of reports about the circumstances of the crash,” she said.
