The UN called on Russia and the United States to return to the implementation of START-3

Russia and the US must return to full implementation of the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START-3). This was stated by the official representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.

“The position of the Secretary General is always clear: the US and Russia must resume full implementation of START without delay,” he said (quote according to TASS).

Dujarric noted that this treaty ensured the security of the entire international community. He added that without nuclear arms control, the world is “more dangerous and unstable.” The UN also called on Moscow and Washington to immediately return to dialogue.

Wherein, clarified Dujarric, UN Secretary General António Guterres is not yet planning to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin the suspension of Russia’s participation in START-3.

On February 21, during his address to the Federal Assembly, Putin declaredthat Moscow decided to suspend participation in the nuclear missile treaty. After the appeal was completed, a presidential decree appeared on the legal information portal on recognizing as invalid the decree of 2012 “On measures to implement the foreign policy of the Russian Federation”, which, among other things, assumed Russia’s participation in START-3.

START-3 was concluded in 2010 for 10 years, it was extended for another five years in 2021 with the coming to power of the administration of US President Joe Biden. It was the last active arms control treaty between Russia and the United States. It provided for the reduction of strategic weapons to 700 deployed (and 800 in total) carriers (submarines, intercontinental missiles and heavy bombers) and 1,550 deployed warheads.
