The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation explained that the former head of the St. Petersburg transport committee and deputy chairman of the government of the Leningrad region, Sergei Kharlashkin, was detained because he is suspected of exceeding his official powers during the construction of one of the metro lines in the northern capital.
According to RIA Novosti, the case was considered in the Basmanny Court of Moscow, the investigator petitioned for the arrest of Kharlashkin, who faces from 3 to 10 years in prison.
The UK believes that in 2015 the St. Petersburg transport infrastructure development committee, headed by Kharlashkin, signed a contract with Metrostroy for the construction of Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya metro line facilities. Officials, according to investigators, knew about the unsatisfactory financial situation of the Metrostroy company, which was unable to fully fulfill its obligations under the contract. Budget funds were used to pay off the debts of third-party organizations.
