The MK journalist was driving into Crimea after the first explosions in the region. Today, after the attack on the Crimean bridge, the question is especially acute – could it have been avoided and how such a strategically important and majestic structure was guarded.

The MK journalist crossed the bridge by car in the summer – on August 9, exactly on the very day when the first explosions were heard in the Crimea in the Novofedorovka area near Evpatoria. At the time of the appearance of this news, we were several tens of kilometers from the Crimean bridge. I was sure that against the backdrop of what had happened, we were waiting for a long queue at the entrance, since, in my opinion, cars after this should have been subjected to a serious inspection.

What was my surprise when at the entrance to the bridge the cars were just lined up in one line: “This is for fixing numbers,” the driver explained. No inspection – and I expected at least to be like an inspection at the border – did not happen. We reached the bridge in five minutes and proceeded without delay. The promised (and expected) traffic jam from oncoming cars also did not exist.

In the future, without ceasing to be surprised at such liberality, I asked a taxi driver who carried out regular transportation from Crimea to the mainland (a stable definition of this route in Crimea). “Is there no screening?” “They can inspect,” the taxi driver agreed, “especially trucks. But it doesn’t always happen. Taxis are usually not inspected – now there is a stream of cars back and forth, planes do not fly, trains cannot cope with the load.

Back from the Crimea, I was returning at the end of August. All this time, the region was restless – air defense was often working. Before Anapa across the bridge, I went by minivan in the afternoon. We reached the Crimean bridge late in the evening – it was dark. The minivan also stood in front of the entrance to the bridge in the general queue and literally five minutes later was on the bridge – no inspection of things and passengers was carried out.
