The Supreme Court (SC) of Russia upheld the decision of the first instance to terminate the activities of the Novaya Gazeta website. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation satisfied the claim of Roskomnadzor and withdrew electronic media license from the site as early as September 15th. The newspaper appealed the decision.
“The closure of Novaya Gazeta is a distrust of our citizens who have been reading us for 29 years,”— declared editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov.
Roskomnadzor’s claims against the Novaya Gazeta website are related to the fact that the department issued two warnings related to the lack of marking of foreign agents. We are talking about the organizations “Civic Assistance” and “Humanitarian Action” (the latter is currently excluded from the register of NPOs-foreign agents).
September 5th was canceled license for the print version of Novaya Gazeta. A day later the court acknowledged invalid registration of the magazine “New story-gazeta”.
On March 28, Novaya Gazeta suspended its work after warnings from Roskomnadzor. The publication planned to resume publication after the completion of the military operation in Ukraine. As a result, the journalists of the publication created a new project – Novaya Gazeta Europe.
How the license was revoked from Novaya Gazeta – in the material “Kommersant” “Novaya Gazeta was charged with the old”.
