British edition The Sun reported with reference to a study conducted at Case Western Reserve University in the US that within a year after undergoing COVID in older people, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease almost doubles.
People over the age of 65 are 50-80% more likely to develop brain disease after contracting COVID, but experts cannot yet establish a precise causal relationship. According to one of the co-authors of the study, the causes of Alzheimer’s disease in people are still “little studied”, but two of them are already known – these are past infections, especially viral ones, and the inflammatory process.
A group of researchers from the United States studied the electronic medical records of 6.2 million Americans over 65 years of age who had not previously been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Then everyone was divided into two groups: one included people who became infected with COVID-19 during the study period, and the other included those who escaped this fate. And in the group of those infected, an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease was found.
