From September 1, 2024, instead of the OBZH lesson, the subject “The basis of security and the defense of the Motherland” will appear in Russian schools. The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Emergency Situations will be responsible for the development of the federal training program. This was announced by the Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy and Management in the Sphere of General Education of the Ministry of Education Anna Timofeeva.
“Today, a working group is being formed that will deal with the formation of a new federal training program, which will include representatives of the Ministry of Defense and representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, since we understand the importance and complexity of this work. In parallel, we will be working on a new textbook for basic and secondary schools,” said Ms. Timofeeva during a round table on the topic “OBZh and NVP in the school curriculum” (quoted from “RIA News”).
Ms. Timofeeva clarified that they plan to complete the development of the program and teaching materials during the next academic year, so that from September 1, 2024, schoolchildren will start studying according to the new curriculum.
According to Anna Timofeeva, two main tasks will have to be solved in the near future: to amend Federal Law 273 in terms of renaming the OBZh subject to “Basic Security and Defense of the Motherland”, as well as to amend the Federal Educational State Standards. “In terms of both content and substantive results, personal results, because we understand that we must supplement the component part of patriotic education, expand this zone of personal results,” she explained.
The subject of life safety consisted of three sections: safety and protection in emergencies, the basics of medical knowledge, the basics of military service. From September 1, 2023, the life safety course will be supplemented with basic military training. This subject was abolished in Russian schools in the early 1990s.
