The State Security Service of Georgia announced the disclosure of a plan for a coup in the country

A group of people of Georgian origin are planning to commit a violent change of power in Georgia. The conspirators want to carry out unrest and a civil coup in October-December, the State Security Service (SSS) of the republic reported.
“One of the authors of the plan seems to us to be the deputy of the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Vano Merabishvili, the current deputy head of military intelligence of Ukraine Georgy Lordkipanidze,” the department said in a message on Facebook (owned by Meta – recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The State Security Service clarified that a member of the inner circle of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and the commander of the Georgian Legion, operating in Ukraine in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mamuka Mamulashvili, may also be involved in the coup plan. Another suspect in preparation for the unrest is former member of Saakashvili’s security guard, Mikheil Baturin.
According to the State Security Service, a coup attempt in Georgia may be carried out in October-December. In October, the European Commission plans to publish an interim decision on granting the republic the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union. The EU is due to announce its final verdict in December. The State Security Service suggests that unrest could break out if Georgia is denied EU candidate status.
The group is preparing for the coup with the help of the Canvas and Otpor organizations. According to the State Security Service, they participated in organizing revolutionary processes in Serbia. The conspirators’ plans include blocking government buildings in Tbilisi and building barricades in the center of the Georgian capital. They want to overthrow the government according to a scenario similar to the Ukrainian “Euromaidan,” the department clarified.
To obtain candidate status for accession to the European Union, Georgia needs execute nine more conditions, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said earlier. These include reforms in the areas of human rights, the rule of law and media freedom. By September 8, the republic had fulfilled three of the 12 conditions, the politician specified.
