Russia decided to protect Russian doctors from criminal prosecution
Several members of the Federation Council and deputies have introduced a bill to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, which proposes to reclassify the work of doctors treating patients as “medical care” instead of the current term “medical services.” This change is partly aimed at protecting doctors from possible criminal prosecution.
According to legislators, there is an increase in cases of doctors being charged under Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for “providing services that do not meet safety requirements.” The initiative would end the use of the term “medical service” to describe what doctors do when treating patients, reserving it only for financial documentation and certain cases.
One of the co-authors of the bill, Senator Daria Lantratova, emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to eliminate unfair treatment of doctors. “Currently, the use of the term ‘service’ in Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation allows its application to medical care. This refers to the intention to commit a crime,” the senator noted.
