The State Duma of the Russian Federation submitted a law on the prohibition of the transfer to prohibit the transfer of religious property
A package of bills aimed at supporting the Russian Orthodox Church and other traditional faiths in terms of ensuring their property rights has been submitted to the State Duma. According to Interfax, the first bill directly prohibits the privatization of religious property, which includes not only temples, but also valuable items, such as icons.
The author of the initiative, deputy Sergei Gavrilov, said that the adoption of the law would stop “the ongoing process of illegal seizure of <...> such facilities to private owners.” He added that the “captured” facilities are often used for other purposes, opening shops or “drinking establishments.”
According to the deputy, the second bill should ensure the protection of the land interests of religions, for example, the functioning of churches in national parks and nature reserves. To solve the problem, the deputy proposes to transfer such land plots for use “for a period of 49 years with the possibility of extension.” Gavrilov believes that this “will ensure the normal service of believers.”
