Dmitry Vyatkin, the first deputy chairman of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, said that works that, in his opinion, “have not stood the test of time” should be removed from the school literature curriculum. As an example, he cited Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago. During a trip to Rostov-on-Don, the politician announced the plans of the authorities in 2023 to revise the training program.
“Gossip in the form of versions,” the deputy said, “how Vysotsky wrote and sang, without any doubt, should be excluded from the school curriculum.”
Regarding Solzhenitsyn’s work, United Russia stated that “as historical analysis has shown <...> many facts by Alexander Isaevich were “sucked out of thin air”, invented”.
“There was an attempt to get a prize for this,” the deputy added. “For the fact that he blotted out his own Motherland in the mud.”
Solzhenitsyn, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, spent eight years in the camps, then was rehabilitated and expelled from the USSR. Received the Nobel Prize in Literature. He published The Gulag Archipelago in the 1970s in the West, in the USSR in the late 1980s. The work is based on the personal experience of the author and the stories of prisoners.
