Deputies of the State Duma adopted a law providing for the withdrawal of the Russian Federation from a number of international agreements ratified earlier, given its membership in the Council of Europe.
In particular, we are talking about the Convention for the Suppression of Terrorism, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the Charter of the Council of Europe.
The decision to withdraw Russia from the Council of Europe was made in early March last year. At the same time, the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry explaining this step, in particular, said: “Russia will not participate in the transformation by NATO and the EU obediently following them of the oldest European organization into another platform for incantations about Western superiority and narcissism.”
