The State Duma proposed to use volunteers to protect the border

It is necessary to involve citizens who voluntarily joined the people’s squad in protecting the state border. Such a statement did Andrey Kartapolov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, in a conversation with Ura.ru.
“Involving the local population on a voluntary basis, in my opinion, is quite realistic and understandable. This is practiced in many countries. Including in the former enlightened Europe,” he said.
Kartapolov noted that now it is important to decide whether such volunteer formations are needed to protect the state border, and only then determine the conditions for their creation. We are talking about the number of units, their organization, control and interaction with other units, the deputy explained. According to Kartapolov, such volunteers are needed today.
Voluntary people’s squads began to form in the border regions, including the Belgorod and Kursk regions, from the spring of 2022 against the backdrop of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine and regular shelling of the border regions of the Russian Federation by Ukraine. In particular, in the Kursk region, the squad was headed by the governor of the region Roman Starovoit.
The tasks of volunteers include ensuring the safety of residents, including checking empty premises, suppressing violations of public order, etc.
In December 2022 in the Belgorod region were created territorial defense units. How explained later Kartapolov, they have the status of voluntary formations of citizens, close to the status of people’s squads. According to him, the territorial defense detachments will solve tasks under the auspices of the RF Ministry of Defense.
Since the beginning of the special operation, the border regions of Russia have been under fire, as well as drone attacks from Ukraine. In addition, on March 2 to the territory of the Bryansk region infiltrated Ukrainian saboteurs. As a result, two people died, and an 11-year-old teenager was also injured. The so-called “Russian Volunteer Corps” took responsibility for the sabotage. Commenting on the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a terrorist attack.
