The State Duma proposed to increase state support for the production of tin

State Duma deputy Sergei Lisovsky (United Russia) in an appeal to the Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov asked to increase state support for the production of tinplate in the country, transmits RBC with a link to the document.

In the letter, Lisovsky asks the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to consider the possibility of allocating additional state support for the production of tinplate in Russia, “as well as the development of alternative procurement channels from foreign manufacturers from states that are not unfriendly.”

Until 2022, lids from foreign manufacturers (Silgan, ThyssenKrupp and others) were used for the production of baby food in jars in Russia, the letter says. As part of the fifth package of EU sanctions, a ban on the import of tin products into the country was introduced. According to Lisovsky, the Russian manufacturer TOCK Packing Plant in Ramenskoye LLC buys raw materials in Serbia and Turkey, but after the cessation of Western supplies, “the capabilities of existing manufacturers in Russia to meet the requirements of all customers do not seem to be sufficient.”

The deputy told RBC that a number of industries will be forced to stop work if alternatives to European supplies are not found. Tinplate is not produced in the Russian Federation, Lisovsky pointed out.

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade previously reported that tinplate is produced by the Miory Metal Rolling Plant in Belarus, which currently has a low load.

In May, the Izvestia newspaper, referring to the minutes of a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko, reported that the Federal Agency for Fishery had recorded a shortage of this raw material for the production of cans. Prior to the start of the military operation in Ukraine, factories usually purchased material for the production of cans and finished containers in Europe, Japan, China, as well as within the country.

“Taking into account the sanctions, imports are now possible only from China. On the territory of the country there are several enterprises for the production of tinplate for food products. But they may not be able to cope with the increased volume of orders,” said German Zverev, President of the All-Russian Association of Fishermen (VARPE).

The Fish Union, in turn, explained that the problems arose due to the violation of supply chains against the backdrop of sanctions imposed by unfriendly countries.
