The head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Leonid Kalashnikov, proposed postponing consideration in the second reading of the presidential bill “On Citizenship”. According to him, it is necessary to resolve the issue of granting citizenship to foreigners who serve in the army. To what date the hearing was postponed, he did not specify.
“I just proposed to postpone it, because we have a proposal there for further consultations on the issues of accepting citizenship of foreigners who serve in the army, and we did not have time to consider it and did not take it into account … from three to a year. Apparently, we will consider it yet, without a date yet, ”Mr. Kalashnikov told RIA Novosti.
The draft law was adopted in the first reading on April 5, 2022. It expands the president’s powers to determine the categories of persons eligible for a simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship, and also introduces the institution of termination of Russian citizenship instead of canceling the decision on admission to citizenship. By the second reading, the number of articles of the Criminal Code, the sentence on which may become the basis for the termination of acquired citizenship, was increased from 35 to 94. Among them are the discrediting of the army, calls for extremism, encroachment on the life of a statesman and the organization of an armed rebellion.
