The State Duma in the third reading adopted a law that prohibits the dismissal of single parents with children under 16 years of age. According to current legislation, single parents with children under 14 years old cannot be fired.
Document was introduced in August 2023 by a group of senators and deputies from the Liberal Democratic Party. The government supported the initiative. Amendments are being made to the Labor Code. The authors of the initiative explained that children generally receive basic general education by the age of 16. Therefore, those raising them need additional protection from the state. Three amendments of a legal and technical nature were made to the document.
Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin saidthat citizens have repeatedly asked for appropriate measures to be taken. In his opinion, the dismissal of a mother who is raising a child under 16 alone “can leave the family without a livelihood.” The head of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Issues of Paternity, Maternity and Childhood, Nina Ostanina, proposed increasing the age of children before which a parent cannot be fired even further.
