The State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation recommended adopting in the first reading a bill to clarify the provisions of the law on presidential elections. The committee called the initiative “reasonable and timely.”
“Taking into account the fact that the election of the President of the Russian Federation is called by the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the said decision must be made no earlier than 100 days and no later than 90 days before voting day, the bill clarifies a number of legislative norms in connection with the upcoming the presidential elections of the Russian Federation in March 2024 seem justified and timely,” the committee concluded (quoted by TASS).
The draft amendments were introduced last week by a group of United Russia parliamentarians led by Senator Andrei Klishas and Deputy Pavel Krasheninnikov. Most of the changes repeat the norms already introduced into the laws “On elections of State Duma deputies” and “On basic guarantees of electoral rights.” For example, one of them allows the authorities to allocate money from their budgets to pay members of election commissions and inform voters, while the other allows only accredited media representatives and observers to take photographs and videos at polling stations.
