The State Duma approved the toughening of the rules for the issuance of weapons

State Duma in the third reading accepted laws that strengthen state control over the circulation of weapons. According to the documents, the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs will check citizens for a threat to state and public security and the danger of violating the rights and freedoms of Russians.
Citizens who have not passed the check of state bodies and are suspected or accused of a deliberate crime will not receive a license for a weapon. The measure also applies to Russians who already have weapons. The ban will be in effect for a year.
The FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs will not check the military, law enforcement officers and representatives of indigenous peoples.
After the shooting at a Kazan school in May 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered tougher gun ownership rules. Last summer, Mr. Putin signed a law according to which firearms are issued from the age of 21. Previously, a license was obtained from the age of 18. The president also signed a law prohibiting the acquisition, possession, carrying and use of weapons by persons with “medical contraindications to owning weapons.”
