Deputies of the State Duma by a majority of votes adopted in the second reading bill on the prohibition of gender reassignment. They also approved an amendment to it that would annul a marriage if one of the spouses changes sex.
The bill was introduced in May by deputies from all five Duma factions, headed by speaker Vyacheslav Volodin. They are banned from medical intervention and drugs for sex reassignment. Chairman of the State Duma explainedthat in this way the deputies want to save the country from the “devilish policy” of the United States, where “these new pseudo-values are being promoted”, the number of transgender people among teenagers is “already three times more” than among adults. The document also prohibits a person who has changed sex from adopting children.
The document does not apply to persons who changed their gender before the entry into force of the law. Sex reassignment does not include medical interventions related to the treatment of congenital anomalies, genetic and endocrine diseases associated with the formation of genital organs in children.
