The State Duma adopted a law on renunciation of citizenship of Ukraine from the date of application

The State Duma immediately adopted a bill in the second and third readings, which will allow citizenship to be considered terminated from the date of filing an application for withdrawal from it to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The relevant document is published on website State Duma.

Bill made to the Duma on December 19, deputies Leonid Kalashnikov (KPRF), Sergei Kabyshev (A Just Russia – For Truth), Sergei Leonov (LDPR) and Artem Turov (United Russia). The document provides for the termination of citizenship of Ukraine from the date of filing an application with the Ministry of Internal Affairs about the unwillingness to be a citizen of Ukraine for those who already have a Russian passport.

As reported in the explanatory note, the number of Russian citizens who simultaneously have Ukrainian citizenship has increased significantly due to the admission of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to Russia. The presence of Ukrainian citizenship prevents, in particular, such citizens from exercising their rights to employment in state and municipal bodies, filling state and municipal positions, and professional activities in certain sectors of the economy, the note says.

The amendments adopted in the second and third readings grant the right to a parent or adoptive parent to file an application for withdrawal from Ukrainian citizenship for a child under 14 years of age. For children left without parental care, including orphans, an application is submitted by a guardian or an authorized representative of the organization in which the child resides, follows from the amendments.

On September 30, Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the entry of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into the Russian Federation. December 6 President of Russia signed a decree according to which citizens of Ukraine will be able to hold positions in government in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. To do this, they need to file a statement of disagreement to be a citizen of Ukraine. December 29 came into force lawallowing foreigners to be in municipal or military service until 2024 if they cannot renounce foreign citizenship for reasons beyond their control.
