The State Department urged American athletes to leave Russia immediately, according to the New York Times.
A State Department spokesman said in a statement that the US Embassy in Russia “has limited ability” to help fellow citizens.
Brittney Greiner, who previously played in Russia for the UMMC club from Yekaterinburg, is currently serving her sentence in Russia. She won world championships and the Olympic Games as part of the US team. In February, she was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport and seized smoking liquid, in which banned substances were later found. The athlete was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
Earlier it was reported that at least 31 basketball players from the United States will play in various clubs in Russia in the new basketball season.
