U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said U.S. intelligence agencies continue to closely monitor Russia’s intense intelligence and espionage activity in Ukraine. He clarified that such actions on the part of the Russian Federation have been observed for a long time.
“We certainly observe the actions of the Russian special services on Ukrainian territory, especially in the context of espionage and intelligence operations,” Miller said.
He also noted that Washington saw reports of a possible assassination attempt on President Vladimir Zelensky during his visit to the Mykolaiv region. At the same time, he pointed out that the details of the incident remain within the competence of the Ukrainian authorities.
“We fully support Ukraine’s efforts to hold accountable those who plan and carry out such actions,” Matthew Miller added.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the arrest of an allegedly Russian spy who tried to find out the route of Zelensky’s movement during his visit to the Mykolaiv region on July 27. As specified, the woman planned to organize a rocket attack.
