Washington intends to “strangle” Novatek’s project for the extraction of natural gas and the production of liquefied natural gas “Arctic LNG – 2”. US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Geoffrey Pyatt told reporters.
“Last week we introduced new sanctions against the Arctic LNG 2 project… Our goal is to strangle it,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
On November 2, the United States imposed sanctions against Arctic LNG 2. The restrictions also included AFK-Sistema, St. Petersburg Exchange, Pochta Bank,Russian standard“, All-Russian Regional Development Bank, Absolut Bank, etc. In total, the sanctions affected about 40 individuals and 200 companies, including foreign ones.
Arctic LNG 2 is a Novatek project for the extraction of natural gas and the production of liquefied natural gas on the Gydan Peninsula, on the other side of the Ob Bay of the Kara Sea from Yamal. The project involves the development of the Utrenneye field on the peninsula and the construction of a liquefied natural gas plant at the Utrenneye terminal in the Gulf of Ob. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the first stage in July 2023. The launch of the second stage of Arctic LNG 2 is scheduled for 2024, and the third in 2026.
Arctic LNG – 2 will be the world’s first plant for the serial production of LNG lines on gravity-type foundations (GTS). Each CDP houses 14 technological modules with a total weight of about 160,000 tons and with a single module weighing up to 17,000 tons. Hundreds of Russian enterprises are involved in the manufacturing process of technological lines, more than 80,000 jobs have been created throughout Russia.
