At the same time, the representative of the American foreign policy department emphasized that he does not defend the point of view according to which “war is good.”
O’Brien also said that continued support for Ukraine is necessary, despite disagreements on this issue among American lawmakers. A State Department aide warned that “if we don’t support Ukraine now, we will spend a lot more on defense in the future.”
He also assured that a significant part of the additional funding for assistance to Kyiv, which the White House requested from Congress, “is intended for reinvestment in the United States.”
Earlier, Erin McKee, assistant to the head of the American Agency for International Development (USAID) for European and Eurasian Affairs, said that at present there are no funds left to continue direct budget support for Ukraine. This may threaten the need to take emergency measures in Ukraine, which could “cause serious damage to military efforts”.
The New York Times notes that the statement by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny that “most likely there will not be a deep and beautiful breakthrough” could negatively affect the further allocation by the United States money to help Kyiv.
