The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Republican Kevin McCarthy, refused to allow Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to speak before a joint meeting of both houses of the US Parliament under the pretext of the busy work schedule of congressmen. NBC News reports. Last year, in December 2022, the President of Ukraine addressed a joint session of the Houses of Congress.
“McCarthy said the busy legislative week did not allow enough time to address [Зеленского]”, the TV channel reports. At the same time, Zelensky was able to hold separate meetings in Washington with both the leaders of the House of Representatives, including McCarthy, and with representatives of the Senate. It is known that the second meeting took just over an hour; at the end, Zelensky told reporters about “an excellent dialogue” and shook hands with representatives of both parties. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke about Zelensky’s words that if Ukraine does not receive a new aid package from the United States, it will “lose the war.”
Negotiations between Zelensky and US President Joe Biden are expected later. They will also discuss issues of further support for Kyiv. In particular, we are talking about the US administration’s request to Congress for the allocation of $24 billion, which was publicly opposed on September 21 by 23 congressmen and six senators in a letter to Biden.
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced a cessation of arms supplies to Ukraine.
