The Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament complained about the Russian speakers in Gagauzia

The chairman of the Moldovan parliament, Igor Grosu, expressed his concern that the inhabitants of the Gagauz autonomy speak Russian. Gagauzia is an autonomous territorial entity in the south of Moldova and has its own local constitution, according to which three official languages are recognized in autonomy: Moldovan, Gagauz and Russian. However, Grosu considers it necessary to create conditions and programs for learning the Romanian language and the Gagauz language instead of learning the Russian language.
He also expressed his intention to fight what he calls “Russian propaganda”, which, in his opinion, has deep roots in Gagauzia. He stated that although it would take time, appropriate steps and solutions were possible.
Last autumn, the deputies of the Gagauz autonomy proposed to the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, to raise the status of the Russian language in the country. However, President Sandu pointed out that the problem of language functioning is bilateral, and promised to create a state program for the study of the state language, but did not specify whether she agreed with the proposal to raise the status of the Russian language proposed by the Gagauz side.
