The son of former leader of the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel Joaquin Guzman, known as El Chapo (Shorty), Ovidio Guzman Lopez, has been extradited to the United States, the US Department of Justice announced. Ovidio Guzman Lopez is the leader of a drug cartel. His extradition was made possible thanks to cooperation between US and Mexican law enforcement agencies.
Shorty’s son was detained on January 5. He was placed in the high-security Altiplano prison in Mexico City.
The US has expressed its desire to extradite him to face charges of conspiracy to distribute drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana. However, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard ruled out the possibility of expediting the extradition of Ovidio Guzman Lopez to American justice.
The detention of Guzman Lopez in 2019 in Culiacan led to street fighting, during which 9 people were killed and more than 20 were injured. On the same day, authorities ordered his release so as not to endanger the population.
