The actor’s sister Julia spoke about how her brother took the news of the mobilization and why he does not hold a grudge against the court, which delivered an unfair sentence in 2019.

The name of the actor Pavel Ustinov appeared on hearing in 2019. He was detained during a rally in connection with the elections to the Moscow City Duma.

During the arrest, one of the policemen injured his shoulder, which he later accused Ustinov of. The court sentenced Pavel to 3.5 years in prison.

Cultural figures vouched for the actor. Pavel was replaced with a real term for a suspended one.

Recently, on the website of the “New Theater”, where Ustinov works, there was information that the actor was mobilized. Further, a quote from Paul himself: “Behind us are families, wives, parents, children who can be in great danger if they do nothing. Moreover, I would not forgive myself if I stayed away.

We talked with Ustinov’s sister, Yulia.

Where has Pavel been working lately?

– At one time he worked at the Moscow Art Theater with Eduard Boyakov. Then the artistic director changed in the theater. Boyakov took Pavel to his new theater.

– In social networks, Pavel posted his photos in the costume of Santa Claus. Did he have to work?

– Yes, he took a part-time job on New Year’s Eve. I didn’t make much money in the theatre.

– After he received the summons, did he go to the draft board without hesitation?

– My brother immediately said: the agenda will come – I will not run. If he doesn’t come, then I’m not needed there.

– Aren’t you afraid?

– No, he didn’t say anything. After all, it is about protecting not only the family, but also their homeland, land. Right right? Moreover, his older brother was also mobilized. He was the first to leave on October 4th. Pavlik left on 12.

In 2019, he was given a suspended sentence. Are people with a criminal record subject to mobilization?

– For a whole year he went, celebrated. Then the case was closed and sent to the archive. So there is no more criminal record on him.

– Is mom worried?

– Well, what do you think? Two sons were immediately taken away. We only saw off one, and a week later came for another. Of course it’s hard.

Where were your brothers sent?

– The elder brother was at first on exercises near Tver. On October 28 they were taken out of there. Where, we don’t know. It is clear that this is classified information, he did not disclose it. Pasha is now only undergoing training near Vladimir.

Did Pavel serve before?

— Yes, in the National Guard. Then they were taught to shoot. But can you learn anything in a year in the army? According to the older brother, in three weeks the guys have now been taught what they have not been taught in the army for a year.

Is Pavel married, do you have children?

– I got married a year ago. No kids.

Pavel was tried after participating in the rally. Then people stood up for him, whom the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation has now declared to be foreign agents. Many have left the country. Did Paul say something about them?

– In principle, he believes that this is their own business.

– Now in the telegram channels you can see comments from liberal-minded people, they say, in vain they fit in for him in 2019. Does it offend you?

– I did not see. Probably not subscribed to such telegram channels where they comment like that. The other day, they just sent me an article about my brother, which was posted by the Patriots of Russia. By the way, in 2019, a lot of negative things were also written about Pasha.

– At the trial, Pavel argued that he did not take part in the rally, but was simply waiting for his friend. How was it really?

“I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He stood and waited for a friend near the subway. After the trial, that friend was tormented by conscience, he showed up, apologized.

– So you think your brother received a suspended sentence for nothing?

– Basically, for nothing.

And still remain a patriot?

– What was, is gone. Now it’s a completely different story. What will he say – I will not go to defend the Motherland, because then I was detained? Now we have to protect the family, relatives.

– Then many thought that Pavel became a liberal, changed his views.

I don’t remember what anyone was thinking then. Paul never had much interest in politics. After the trial, he continued to live a normal life, did not get involved in politics.

When did Paul last call you?

He rarely calls. And he says briefly: everything is fine, alive and well.

– I remember that in 2019 you were worried about your brother even more than he was about himself. And now, apparently, too.

– And there is. I still remember how I went to the pre-trial detention center and the courts … Now the main thing is that my loved ones return alive.
